Over 150,000 people witnessed the wedding of V.N. Sudhakaran, foster son of Jayalalitha Jayaram, former Tamil Nadu chief minister and ex-movie star, to N. Sathyalakshmi, grand-daughter of Sivaji Ganesan, a veteran Tamil movie star. The Hindu Vedic wedding rituals were watched on screens around the 50 acre grounds. The two day celebrations included a wedding banquet for over 150,000 people. The wedding is reported to have cost over 750 million rupees ($23,299,162), with the dining area costing an estimated Rs 15 million ($465,983) and the menu an estimated Rs 20 million ($621,311). A mock fortress topped with cannons and winged mythological creatures was constructed at the entrance of the wedding grounds. The five kilometre three mile drive from the temple to the grounds was strewn with rose petals and lined with 600 Grecian columns strung with coloured lights along with papier mache models of ancient Indian princes in erotic poses.
