According to Official Guinness Records,

The most people stargazing is 1,869 and was achieved by Mt. Stromlo Observatory, The Australian National University, and the Canberra Astronomical Society (all Australia), in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia, on 21 August 2015.The attempt took place as part of national science week.
