  • Rosh Hashanah:

[tx-op] The year 5782 starts on this date in the Hebrew/Jewish calendar! Rosh Hashanah, which literally means "beginning of the year"in Hebrew and referred to in the Torah as Yom Teruah, is the day of the Jewish New Year. In the Jewish calendar, this day is Tishrei 1st. Whole families attend synagogue services where the blowing of an instrument called a shofar, tool made from the horn of a ram or other animal, serves as "a special call"and it is meant to encourage people to reflect on the years that have passed and the years to come. See the Jewish Calendar.

Texas legal reference:House Concurrent Resolution 136, 68th Legislature, 1983. (not listed in the session laws) Senate Bill 179 (Appropriations Bill), 68th Legislature Regular Session. Chapter 1095. Approved June 19, 1983 and Effective August 29, 1983.

Notes:

[fed-ob] United States federal observances are days, weeks, months, or other periods designated by the United States Congress for the commemoration or other observance of various events, activities, or topics. These observances differ from Federal holidays in that Federal employees only receive a day free from work on holidays, not observances. Federal observances that are designated by Congress appear in Title 36 of the United States Code (36 U.S.C. § 101 et seq.).

[tx-op] This is an optional holiday in the State of Texas.
