“Sunflower Seeds”, an art installation by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, comprises 100 million replica sunflower seeds, with each “seed” intricately crafted in porcelain and then hand-painted by a team of 1,600 skilled artisans. The artwork was laid out in a rectangle measuring 1,000 m2 (10,764 ft2) on the floor of the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London, UK, and exhibited to the public between 12 October 2010 and 2 May 2011. Although visitors were at first permitted to walk on the exhibit, the resulting dust thrown up was considered a health risk and barriers were later erected around it. On 29 January, members of the European art collective IOCOSE used slingshots to fire four real sunflower seeds into Ai Weiwei’s artwork, thus creating a new exhibit that they entitled Sunflower Seeds on Sunflower Seeds.
