After a series of trials at the British Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, the US Raytheon company’s Boomerang Warrior - X shooter detection system has been rated the most effective of a number of systems selected for field testing in Afghanistan with the UK Parachute Regiment. The device, weighing only 11 ounces, is worn on a soldier’s shoulder and includes a hand-held display. It can pinpoint the position of enemy shooters up to 3,000 feet away by displaying the target’s coordinates and a pointer on a small screen, as well as emitting a warning sound in the soldier’s headset. Developed from the Boomerang III system used on vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan, the new system is reported to cost around £10,000 for each unit and is the most advanced detector yet.
