The Saturn V rocket, developed as part of NASA’s Apollo program, remains the largest rocket ever built. It stood 110.6 metres tall (363 ft) on the launchpad and weighed as much as 2,965 tonnes (3,268 US tons) when fully fuelled and ready to launch. The first Saturn V, which carried the unmanned Apollo 4 capsule, launched on 9 November 1967. The 13th, and last, launched on 14 May 1973. Between 1967 and 1973 Saturn V rockets carried out seven moon landing missions (including the unsuccessful Apollo 13) and launched the Skylab 1 space station into orbit. The weight of the Saturn V varied from launch to launch, depending on the mission and payload. The lightest rocket to carry a manned mission was SA-503, which carried Apollo 8 on its translunar flight, at 2,822 tonnes (3,110 US tons). The heaviest was SA-511, which carried the Apollo 16 moon mission (along with its Lunar Roving Vehicle), at 2,965 tonnes (3,268 US tons). Rocket SA-506, which carried the Apollo 11 mission, weighed in at 2,938 tonnes (3,238 tonnes).
