The largest insect hotel / house measures 18.46 m³ ( 651.91 ft³) achieved by Peter Bullen and WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre (both UK), in Burscough, Ormskirk, Lancashire, UK, on 25 August 2017.The bug hotel is located within the Wild Walk at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre. The insect hotel/house will remain in that location permanently and will play a vital role in increasing the biodiversity of Martin Mere’s Wetland habitat, providing a safe place for insects and other animals to sleep, breed and hibernate.Martin Mere Wetland Centre is part of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) a conservation charity established to protect wetlands and the species that inhabit them, regionally, nationally and internationally. Martin Mere is one of nine WWT centres in the UK. These centres showcase wetland conservation and engage with visitors about sustainability and how they can become more wildlife and water friendly at home. Boxes no larger than 50 cm in diameter, filled with twigs, grass, straw, pine cones, etc. were placed back to back to allow insects to access them from any angle. Burscough Priory Science College, Burscough St Johns Primary School and Burscough Village Primary School, visitors of the wetlands, employees of DS Smith Packaging and different community groups contributed to fill the boxes placed to conform the insect hotel.Peter Bullen, named as record holder, has worked for WWT Martin Mere for over 40 years and is due for retirement within this year.
