The first person to successfully achieve horizontal human flight is Yves Rossy (Switzerland), who flew for four minutes at an altitude of 1,600 m (5,250 ft) and at a speed of 180 km/h (111 mph) above Yverdon airfield, near Lake Neuchâtel, in Switzerland, on 24 June 2004. The former military pilot created his 'jet-man' project by adding two kerosene-powered jet engines to his 3-m (10-ft), foldable carbon wings.Rossy launched from a Pilatus Porter Plane at 4,000m (13,120 ft), then opened the wings, glided to 2,500 m (8,200 ft), ignited the engines and after 30 seconds for stablizing, released the throttle to then fly horizonally.
