The following is a compilation of American federal holidays, federal observances, state holidays and other common patriotic and national observances and commemorations that apply to the United States during Tuesday, 2018-05-01:

  • Law Day, U.S.A.:

[fed-ob][pro] Law Day, U.S.A., is a special day of celebration by the people of the United States— (1) in appreciation of their liberties and the reaffirmation of their loyalty to the United States and of their rededication to the ideals of equality and justice under law in their relations with each other and with other countries;and (2) for the cultivation of the respect for law that is so vital to the democratic way of life.
    (c) Proclamation.— The President is requested to issue a proclamation— (1) calling on all public officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Law Day, U.S.A.;and (2) inviting the people of the United States to observe Law Day, U.S.A., with appropriate ceremonies and in other appropriate ways, through public entities and private organizations and in schools and other suitable places.
  • Loyalty Day:

[fed-ob][pro] (a) Designation.— May 1 is Loyalty Day. (b) Purpose.— Loyalty Day is a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom. (c) Proclamation.— The President is requested to issue a proclamation— (1) calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Loyalty Day;and (2) inviting the people of the United States to observe Loyalty Day with appropriate ceremonies in schools and other suitable places.
According to the Presidential Proclamation (2015),
As Americans, we are united not by the circumstances of our birth or our station in life, but by our fidelity to a set of shared ideals and unalienable rights. The principles of freedom, justice, and equality for all are at the very core of who we are as a Nation. We believe firmly in the power of democracy and opportunity -- but we know that these blessings are only what we make of them, and that our experiment in self-government gives work and purpose to each new generation. Today, we recommit to the profoundly patriotic work of doing all we can to better the country we love.

  • Lei Day:

[hi] Lei Day is a celebration of Hawaiian culture and tradition which occurs every year on the first of May (and even continues the next day) in the state of Hawaii. The poet Don Blanding and writer Grace Tower Warren created the phrase "May Day is Lei Day"and started a new revolutionary idea that caused a lot of fesivities throughout Hawaii. The lei is a Hawaiian word and refers to a crown, usually adorned with flowers, that is worn around the neck and it is given to people as a symbol of hospitality when arriving or leaving a location. Each Hawaiian island has a different kind of lei that is used during the celebration. During this day, activities such as concerts, hula dances, competitions and exchange of leis take place.
  • May Day:

[other] 1 May is not a holiday in the United States. However, it is a day for two well known purposes: workers' solidarity and protests. On this day, most of the world celebrates International Workers' Day, which in the United States is known as Labor Day and celebrated on the first Monday of September.
  • Teacher Appreciation Day:

Teacher Appreciation Day is an opportunity for students to show appreciation for their teachers with gifts or writing thank you cards. The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day as "a day for honouring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives". In Massachusetts, Teachers' Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of June.

Notes:

[fed-ob] United States federal observances are days, weeks, months, or other periods designated by the United States Congress for the commemoration or other observance of various events, activities, or topics. These observances differ from Federal holidays in that Federal employees only receive a day free from work on holidays, not observances. Federal observances that are designated by Congress appear in Title 36 of the United States Code (36 U.S.C. § 101 et seq.).

[pro] This is a special day designated by presidential proclamation.

[hi] This is a State Holiday in the State of Hawaii.

[other] This is a religious, traditional, or informal observance celebrated in the United States.
