In South Africa, National Women's Day is celebrated in 1994 to commemorate a protest march organized by women in 1956 against the obligation of black citizens of carrying passes during the apartheid era. Taking this into account and expressing solidarity with the women of South Africa and Namibia, the United Nations General Assembly decided to commemorate each year on 9 August the International Day of Solidarity with the Struggle of Women in South Africa and Namibia.
