International Days April 23 2021 (United Nations)

The following is an overview of the days and the corresponding celebration declared by the United Nations that apply to Friday, 2021-04-23:

  • World Book and Copyright Day:

[UNESCO] In order to yield a universal tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity, UNESCO created the World Book and Copyright Day to be held on April 23, a symbolic date for world literature since that day conincide with the birth or death of prominent writers as Cervantes, Shakespeare, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, among others.
  • United Nations English Language Day:

The English Language Day is a day to create conscience among the official and staff members of the history, culture, development and use of the English language throughout the United Nations. 23 April was chosen because it is traditionally observed as the birthday of William Shakespeare. Because there are six official languages in the United Nations, this day is actually part of a group of other 5 more days meant to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the United Nations. For completeness, Spanish Language Day is celebrated on 12 October. French Language Day is celebrated on 20 March. Arabic Language Day is celebrated on 18 December. Chinese Language Day is celebrated on 20 April. Russian Language Day is celebrated on 6 June.
