International Days August 12 2019 (United Nations)

The following is an overview of the days and the corresponding celebration declared by the United Nations that apply to Monday, 2019-08-12:

  • International Youth Day:

    On 17 December 1999 the General Assembly in its resolution 54/120, endorsed the recommendations of the World Conference of Ministers of Youth and proclaimed August 12 as International Youth Day, with the aim of:

    Improving youth participation in the activities of the United Nations as well as in society and in decision-making.

    Developing policies in priority areas such as education, employment, hunger and poverty, health, environment, drug abuse and juvenile delinquency.

    Developing channels of communication and cooperation between youth organizations of the United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental youth organizations.

  • Eid al-Adha:

    [headq] As stated in resolutions 52/214, 52/468 and other related United Nations resolutions, Staff at all United Nations duty stations, including the United Nations Headquarters, are to observe Eid al-Adha as holiday. Eid al-Adha is also called the Sacrifice Feast and it honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son, as an act of submission to God's command. It is celebrated every year on the 10th day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the islamic calendar. Please note that the date for the start of any lunar islamic month varies based on the observation of new moon by local religious authorities, so the exact day of celebration varies by locality and there may be a one-day error in the date calculation.
